⇒RÉGALIA1, subst. masc. plur.
HIST. [En Angleterre ou dans d'autres cours royales] Insignes royaux (couronne, globe, sceptre, etc.) dont on se servait pour la cérémonie du couronnement. Les attributs du pouvoir royal ou « regalia » apparaissent sur les sceaux avec une exactitude et un réalisme qu'ils n'ont pas toujours dans la miniature ou dans la sculpture contemporaine (L'Hist. et ses méth., 1961, p. 413).
Prononc.:[]. Homon. et homogr. régalia2. Étymol. et Hist. 1875 nom donné en Angleterre aux objets précieux qui servent au couronnement du souverain (Lar. 19e). Mot lat. médiév. att. au sens de « insignes royaux » au XIIe s. (OTTO DE FREISING ds BLAISE Latin. Med. Aev.; aussi « droits du souverain », v. régale2) et prob. introd. en fr. par l'intermédiaire de l'angl. regalia, att. dep. 1626 (ds NED).

Mot esp. issu p. ell. de tabaco (tabac) de regalía « tabac de qualité supérieure », regalía ayant signifié d'abord « prééminence, prérogatives du souverain » (v. AL. et régale2).
